This walking holiday  invites you do discover the beautiful coastline of the Alentejo in a self-guided walk in the Fishermen’s Trail, combined with the inland Historical Way, which allows you  to taste a bit of the countryside and its historical villages.

Starting at the picturesque coastal village of Porto Covo, this tour takes you walking by beautiful beaches and cliffs, with the Atlantic ocean by your side and the salty perfume of the sea breeze all around. It’s a great way to get to know the region, before heading inland.

Crossing historic small villages, such as S. Luís, Odemira and S. Teotónio, you will have the chance to experience an authentic Alentejo, with its cork tree forests, the small farms and even a surprising refreshing green flora by the river Mira and its tributary streams.

Don’t worry about booking accommodations or getting transfers, because everything is taken care of for you. Just relax, enjoy the way and rest at cozy rural tourisms where you’ll stay overnight and be warmly welcomed.

Day 1: Arrive to Alentejo

Arrive to Alentejo, to Vila Nova de Milfontes

By car – Hilltoptreks Staff will do the transfer of the clients from Lisbon Airport to Vila Nova de Milfontes accomodation.
By train – Hilltoptreks staff will go with the clients from Lisbon airport to Oriente Train station where the clients will take the train to Funcheira train station. There will be a short transfer from Funcheira train station to Vila Nova Milfontes  accommodation.

Transfers from Faro can also be arranged.

Accommodation: Casa do Adro da Igreja, in a quiet corner of Milfontes.

Day 2: Walking from Port Covo to Vila Nova de Milfontes (Coastal Walk)

Distance: 20 km, Approx: 7hr
Accumulated climb: 167m, Accumulated descent: 149m
Difficulty level: Difficult
Walk Description: This is the beaches section, where you will walk along the vast sand dunes area of Ilha do Pessegueiro, Aivados and Malhão beaches and discover small deserted coves that will surprise you. It is a tiring walking day though, given its extension and the constant sandy terrain.

Accommodation: Herdade da Estacada, a large farm near Cape Sardão.

Day 3: Vila Nova de Milfontes to Almograve (Coastal Walk)

Distance: 15 km, Approx: 5hr
Accumulated climb: 88m Accumulated descent: 116m
Difficulty level: Somewhat Difficult
Walk Description: This is a day to purify your soul thanks to the overwhelming views over Vila Nova de Milfontes and the Mira river that meets the ocean here. It is a short and accessible hiking day so that you may enjoy the area to its fullest extent. Picked up from trail.

Day 4: Almograve to Zambujeira do Mar (Coastal Walk)

Distance: 22km, Approx: 7 h
Accumulated climb: 203m Accumulated descent: 193m
Difficulty level: Somewhat Difficult
Walk Description: The high Cliffs on this section are the nesting site for over twenty species of bird! These include Jackdaw, Shag, Common Kestrel, “pure” Rock Dove, White Stork, Peregrine Falcon and Black Redstart. Small fishing harbours, reddish sand dunes, the scent of pine tree forests and the sight, seen nowhere else in the world of storks nesting on the cliffs make this walk a true balm for your senses.

Day 5: S. Luís to Odemira (Inland Walk)

Distance: 25km, Approx: 8hr (You can shorten this by request)
Accumulated climb: 274m, accumulated descent: 436m
Difficulty level: Somewhat difficult
Walk Description: This is the water section, where a different, green and vibrant Alentejo reveals itself before your eyes, with refreshing water streams and ponds – Ribeira do Torgal being the protagonist – where forests of valuable species such as ash, willow and alder trees covering the water streams banks abound.

Day 6: Odemira to S. Teotónio (Inland Walk)

Distance: 19km, Approx: 6hr
Accumulated climb: 343m, Accumulated descent: 167m
Difficulty level: Easy
Walk Description: In one of Rota Vicentina’s most accessible sections, given the nature of the track – always wide and with mild ascents and descents – you’ll walk with rivers Mira and S. Teotónio for company, getting in close contact with the beauty of the inland area of this municipality, between the hills and the sea. Pickup from trail.

Accommodation: Cerro da Fontinha

Day 7: Zambujeira do Mar to Odeceixe (Coastal Walk)

Distance: 18km, Approx: 7hr
Accumulated climb: 263m, Accumulated descent: 283m
Difficulty level: Somewhat Difficult
Walk Description: Transfer to the trail. You will be passing the beaches of Alteirinhos, Carvalhal, Machados and Amália  on the way to Azenha do Mar, where you will find a natural fishing harbour. To top it all enjoy one of the most outstanding views in the entire territory: Odeceixe beach seen from the majestic Ponta Branca.

Accommodation: Cerro da Fontinha 

Day 8: Get back home

After breakfast you will be transferred to Train station to reach Faro or LisbonAirport.

*The program includes breakfast, picnic in walking days, luggage transfer, pickup and drop off transfers from and to the beginning/end of section and eccommodation at each day.
